Oh Darling! Lets be adventurers

Adult Stuff

It still catches me off guard when someone in the office says to me: “I’d really like to talk to you about X…think we could meet after your 1:30pm meeting?”

I’m all: “Yes, of course, meeting shouldn’t run over a half hour, meet in the 19th floor conference room?”

But inside I’m: “LOLOLOL WHY YES I CAN PENCIL YOU IN TO DIZCUZ BIZNEZ THINGS. I HAVE ALL SORTS OF IMPORTANT MEETINGS WHERE WE TALK BIZNEZ THINGS. ALSO WE’RE BOTH WEARING SUIT COATS. ISNT PLAYING BIZNEZ COOL??”

Why on earth anyone takes me seriously is beyond me. WHO LET ME DO THIS.

We must reject the notion that tastes are somehow natural or innate, and instead acknowledge that they are learned and then internalized. This is thus somewhat contrary to our commonsense understandings-most of us tend to view our tastes as idiosyncratic, unique, and deeply personal. In fact, it is the commonsensical nature of our view of taste that allows tastes to operate as a mechanism of social reproduction. To the extent that we treat them as natural and inevitable, we refuse to critique our tastes. In refusing to critique them, we ignore one of the means by which our social structure is reproduced.

I dream of a quiet man
who explains nothing and defends
nothing, but only knows
where the rarest wildflowers
are blooming, and who goes,
and finds that he is smiling
not by his own will.
